The “ceasefire”: What does it mean? A look at the new deal.
For well over 80 years, the question of Palestine has been at the fore of geopolitical discussion; however, before the 7th of October 2023, the world had gone all but completely silent on the matter, minus a a small percentage of the world who continued to advocate on behalf of the Palestinian people, the normalisation process was well underway in the region between Israel and other Arab nations, the mainstream media had ignored the situation.
That of course was until, the oppressed people of the Gaza Strip smashed the shackles of the siege and arose from the open-air prison in which many had lived most of if not their entire lives under the siege.
But what does it mean now that the “ceasefire” deal is now in affect?
Reports confirm that aid trucks are now entering the Gaza Strip, Israeli soldiers are pulling back from some areas but have warned residents not to approach their positions where they remain, this should lead to their eventual pull out but if we are to go by what is being said among those in the halls of power we need to take this with a pinch of salt.
We are already seeing the doubt and spins on the “narrative” of the “ceasefire” by the Israeli regime and officials within its halls of power; Netanyahu himself is still throwing up doubt around the phases of the deal with his continual throwing up of obstacles that has been a familiar theme from him and his administration throughout this sordid campaign.
This morning the time for the agreement was set for around 08:30AM but did not come into affect until 11:15AM which led to the deaths of several people in Israeli strikes.
The Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has said he and his party has received guarantees from Netanyahu that the operations in Gaza are not over, at least afterwards when the three phases of the “ceasefire” deal are completed.
And that “gradual takeover” will be the way forward for Israel in Gaza.
Netanyahu also said recently ‘if we must return to fighting, we will do that’. As much as I hope and wish for this to be the end of the violence and occupation but this is not the end, the violence at least has ceased for now against the people.
As Professor Morandi said “Israel needs this ceasefire” but so does the people of Palestine, It has not been an easy time for Israel nor for the “Axis of Resistance” it has always been a “struggle” and is called as much for a reason, but its clear Israel has utterly failed in achieving any of its military goals and objectives set-out after Oct 7th 2023 and this goes for in Lebanon as well facing fierce resistance throughout.
Many analysts rightfully point out that the Israeli army has spread itself thin across the region in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine. They have failed to achieve any of their objectives within Gaza; they have failed in Lebanon to “destroy” Hezbollah, although it could be argued that they have eroded some of their capabilities they are far from defeated, Israel however; they have been dealt heavy blows, but they must not be underestimated, especially with the support of the imperialist West especially the United States.
They are being propped up; without this support, they would collapse within weeks if not days but with it they can most likely maintain this trajectory indefinitely with the diplomatic and political cover of the US adding to the impunity of Israel. We must now watch for Israel’s and the US’s next moves in the region, with the 20-year Strategic Partnership signed between Russia and Iran in recent days gives both Israel and the US food for thought and pause to think about how best to proceed.
With the leaking of the plans of the last administration around attacking Iranian nuclear facilities showed us the US was ready and willing to launch “pre-emptive” strikes against Iran, without a doubt the timing of the Strategic partnership renewal between Iran and Russia was in a timely manner sending clear messages to the US establishment.
Change of U.S. administration…
Trump is an unpredictable character who may or may not be a “positive” when it comes to stopping the violence of the Israeli campaign in Gaza so far so good but it is still early days in the process, overall it will continue much the same if history is anything to go by, yes the deal will go through but for how long will it last? How else will the occupation and violence of the genocidal regime manifest.
We already see the US pushing for the Palestinian Authority to take over in Gaza, this comes after Hamas called for a transitional council. The pushing of the PA in Gaza is helping to sow the seeds of division not only that but the PA’s actions in Jenin leave a lot of questions open increasingly so with the wider Palestinian society questioning its place and its actions within Palestinian communities.
With changes of administrations within the imperialists systems real change is rare, even more so when it comes to the foreign policy of these nations, the unelected people within the centres of capital, those within the system in positions of extreme influence and power are the ones who dictate the direction of a country, people talking about fascism coming to America, it was already there for a long time !
These people and their institutions, lobby groups have projections and they have goals and objectives these rarely change with change of administration and it can be seen throughout the years, the interests of the Ruling Class may not always be the same but they sure do rhyme.
When people speak about “Democracy” being an illusion, an illusion of choice, of change this is what they mean an illusion perpetuated by people who neither want to understand nor care to understand that its theatrics for sake of maintaining the status quo.
The old“chance for change” that is dangled in front of your face like a carrot every few years on a stick as you “participate” in “creating change” through voting only for it to be pulled from your teeth time and again should tell you what you need to know.
Change cannot happen from within this system. You either become part of it or you’re spat out of it in ruin.
With Donald Trump's unpredictability, we may see him do things that we didn’t expect, but we must remember this was the man who oversaw the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani. The man who greenlit moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, the man who, as president, recognized Israel’s “sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” Syrian territory that had been seized by Israel after the “six-day war” in 1967.
This deal, however, was welcomed by the people of Gaza; of course, it was but Israel didn’t fail to take that opportunity to kill more people in the process. As people gathered in Gaza a number of them were targeted in Israeli strikes.
A reprieve from the violence should be welcomed, but we must be wary that this is not the end, and we must continue to highlight the duplicitous nature of not only those conducting this genocide but also those backing it. And the crimes that they inferably commit, as we have seen all too often in the past after each “ceasefire.”.
The Ansar’Allah Houthi’s campaign against Israel has also shown that the Axis of Resistance can become more than a burden for these powers, leading to restrictions on global maritime travel in the Red Sea, a crucial trade route for global shipping. Ansar’Allah has said:
“We will target any ships heading to Israeli ports in the Mediterranean Sea in any area we are able to reach,” Yahya Saree Ansar’Allah spokesman
"The ship doesn't necessarily have to be heading to Israel for us to target it; it is enough for it to be American," Nasruldeen Amer Ansar’Allah spokesman
While this is going on, Israeli forces continue their campaign of extermination, again turning up the tempo in the Gaza Strip with over 120 people killed in Israeli airstrikes since the ceasefire's announcement on Wednesday.
The onslaught on the West Bank itself continues, and I am afraid that once the spotlight is taken off Gaza, the gaze of Israel will again refocus on its campaign on the West Bank as Donald Trump comes into office on Monday. The Israeli machinations of the annexation of the occupied territories continue to manifest with the regular nightly raids, the seizure of lands, and the destruction of civil and critical infrastructure. It seems the "stage" is set as the transfer of power in the United States takes place in the next few days.
The Israeli administration can try and do as it pleases, but they will face a fury unlike any they have seen before if they attempt this “annexation” and planned cut-up of the West Bank.
Over the past two years, even before the ‘Al Aqsa flood operations’ and then Israel’s genocidal campaign into Gaza, it was the deadliest year to date for people living in the West Bank.
Something that western establishment media fail to address when framing the narrative on Palestine, especially as it pertains to the very situation we witness now, is that "this did not happen in a vacuum." Not only was this statement referring to the decades of occupation and repression but also the very escalation by Israeli forces against Palestinian communities in the occupied territories prior to the 7th of October.
Some analysts and experts say that the clearing of rubble and beginning of reconstruction could take up to a decade, the reconstruction effort itself may take “80 years under current conditions due to the ongoing Occupation and blockade” according to Balakrishnan Rajagopal. Below is some of the satellite images taken over the period of Israel’s campaign before and after.
